Core is a short film based on the transformative power of BDSM and the meditative state that occurs on the other side of this transformation. It focuses on three different types of fetish—latex, rope bondage, and whips. The highlighted practitioners in each scene, all heavily involved and respected within the BDSM community, are well versed in their specific fetishes. They share a deep connection that goes beyond the physical practice itself.

The purpose of this film is to capture that connection. If one were to think of BDSM as words in a sentence, Core represents the spaces between the words – the poetry of rhythm, the language of movement, the catharsis within the aesthetic. It peels away BDSM archetypes and leaves the viewer with a visual imprint of what lies beyond the physically obvious. To this effect, Core avoids the faces of each practitioner in order to de-emphasize individual identities and express a shared identity for those who practice kink.

Sound artist and fellow practitioner Leslie Deere created the film’s ambient soundscape to emphasize these intimate moments through the droning rhythms of processed harp and cello recordings. Her composition alters with each scene to express the energy of each fetish.

This piece is intended to be presented in a small dark room with three black painted wall and the visual projected onto the fourth wall snugly covered in white latex. Two black leather beanbags will be positioned in front of the projection each with designated headphones for the audio. The idea behind the latex wall and leather chair is to create a sensorial experience where one can feel and smell leather whilst watching the video as it is bounced off of latex. The piece will play on a continuous loop.
